Summary:
The BIO Kenya project aims to turn waste into wealth where it promotes the use of biochar and insect-composted organic fertilizers (ICOF) to significantly increase crop yields, suppress pests and diseases, reduce soil degradation and mitigate climate change through carbon sequestration at minimal cost. The key activities will include: promotion of sustainable supply of ICOF and biochar to farming communities in target project implementation counties; enhancement of job opportunities targeting the youth and women along the value chains of ICOF and biochar in Busia, Kisumu, and Siaya counties; and promotion of evidence-based policy formulation, planning and legislation on ICOF and biochar processing and commercialization. Findings from the project will contribute to environmental health, increased soil health and crop yield, poverty reduction and support the Kenyan government in its objective of ensuring food and nutritional security, adapting agricultural production to the shocks of climate change and improving the livelihoods of women and youths through circular economy.
